jem wax unveils bold, eclectic anthem ‘SPIDERRR’

This is one of those occurrences where words might not suffice in communicating the substantial value of art. What I can do instead, is narrate the extent of my reaction to it, recounting the aural experience I have thoroughly enjoyed. Now, I know for a fact that a sizable number of folks are fed up with the over-generalization of pop music over the last few years, perhaps in a futile quest for virality or contiguity.

‘SPIDERRR’ serves – well deservedly – as an antidote to the modern obsession with uniformity, instead taking an oblique, effective approach to authenticity, building a blank canvas for jem wax’s unique, nuanced artistry. Written and produced by an all-female dream team (in which we are happy to spot the likes of Emma Tea), ‘SPIDERRR’ is truly one of the boldest, most creative pieces we have come across recently.

Stacked on a hyper-eclectic blend of soulful grooves, jazzy tones and pungent electronic pop, the single is the perfect match for jem’s heart-shaking, unapologetic vocals, here delivered with extra spice and incredible charisma. The catchiness behind ‘SPIDERRR’ is understated yet prominent, it sneaks up on you with playful, buoyant terms (‘itsy bitsy’) and repetitive hooks, making sure to hypnotize the listeners and pull them back into the project.

Lyrically, the song is honest and direct, with jem wax offering an empowering tale of resilience and resistance in the face of male privilege and perverse power dynamics, As she explains: “I want people to feel empowered, to have fun, and to dust off a few cobwebs after listening to the track. To me, ‘SPIDERRR’ is like Imagine Dragons meets auto-tune, meets UK rap, meets soul.”
