When approaching ‘Glory Be’, the listening experience is bound to be cathartic, soothing, and almost transformative. How? You might ask. Well, for starters, one can identify head honcho Grey Jeán’s evocative vocals as the main vehicle of such meditative energy. Their tone is controlled, while charismatic and intense. Engaging in deep and nuanced storytelling, the American lyricist brings the listeners on a journey through introspection and reflection.
Perhaps, you’ll recognize yourself in the song at some point: we mirrored ourselves into some of the lyrics, signalling the universality of the many truths and struggles explored by Jéan. Of course, its musical counterpoint plays a strong role too. Introduced by a sombre guitar arpeggio (á la Jeff Buckley), the record moves slowly and with understated poignancy, almost in a mournful manner. We are in folk territories.
Completed by Jeán’s fiancé Gabrielle Néla and instrumentalists Ikaika and Dash, Jeán et Joie manage to craft a single that feels universal, while elegant and composed. A recommended listen.
