Jay Wood is an up-and-coming singer/songwriter from Western Australia who, just today, released her beautiful ukulele-infused debut single in the form of ‘oh well’. Serving as a testament to the indie musician’s resilience, determination, and strength after a life-altering car accident, Jay could not have picked a better tune to introduce herself to the world. Written at a time before same-sex marriages were legal in Australia, the artist tells a tale of unexpected heartbreak. Through upbeat and summery melodies, subtly melancholic lyrics, and the recurring phrase of ‘oh well’, Jay sends out an emotional reminder of lost love.
“The song morphed into more of an optimistic song with a lament of the love gone by,” says Wood. Her lyricism and storytelling ability are unbelievably good, and let’s not forget this is her first release! The track was produced, mixed, and mastered by the team at Norman Solander Studios in Perth, and they truly did a superb job. Rich, warm, and enormously engrossing.
‘oh well’ will form part of Jay’s debut EP ‘Respire’ which is scheduled for release on the first of September. Her aim of inspiring others to reach their full potential and embrace life’s challenges has resonated with me hard today. I’m in love with this little tune, and eagerly await to hear all of ‘Respire’!
