While approaching Jay Korner for the first time, the keen listener might be inclined to identify him as a purely musicianship-driven project. While that’s true – with the Swedish talent dedicated to delivering soulful and groovy funk material built on the genre’s best tradition – you’d be mistaken not to consider the profound lyrical message Korner seeks to charge in his songs. Take ‘High On Life’, for instance, Jay’s latest effort. While the musical side is absolutely phenomenal, sharing strong 70s tones and organic energy, its lyricism is as valuable.
Exploring the difficulties that many of us might come across in today’s complex reality, Korner wants to empower the listener into taking life head-on, living it to its fullest. Inspired by Jay’s daughters, ‘High On Life’ is first and foremost a call to action, providing comfort and solace (and motivation) to whoever might need them (especially the young generations).
Produced by Korner with Alexander Asp, the track also features Pär Gustafson on congas, Stefan Jernståhl on Hammond organ and clavinet, Josue Garcia on horns, and Domenico Solaro on backing vocals, all part of an ensemble that plays a big role in the project’s upcoming album, expected for 2024.
