I am not always that enthusiastic, but Jarki Monno’s vocals sound like a million dollars. Mesmerized is truly impressed with him: boasting the ability to pack immense poignant energy into his performances, the British troubadour has been rightfully noticed by pretty much the whole industry. The BBC has had a lot to say about him, yet Monno has not gone full mainstream yet. I reckon it’s a matter of time, especially judging by what we can hear in ‘who took your smile?’.
Jarki’s latest effort, the single is rather nuanced and meaningful. Born out of personal experience, the song feels inspiring and anthemic, empowering listeners to assume responsibility for their own destinies and future. That’s what Monno did: taken aback by intense grief, he had to find a way forward, starting with holding himself accountable and looking at his own choices.
As Monno explains: “I had to hold myself accountable for the journey to being myself again.” ‘who took your smile?’ does a good job of translating such pivotal emotional energy into sonic form, giving us a modern, luscious tune that’s absolute goodness for the keenest of ears.
