From time to time, we find pleasure in stripping back our listening habits, leaving complex electronica and mainstream material behind in favour of more relatable and immediate acoustic songs. Luckily, we recently came across a stunning record by a very talented Canadian folk wizard: ‘Just Let Me Be Mad’ is Jared Waterman’s latest album, a collection of eleven soothing and evocative songs exploring human consciousness and human behaviours, written with wisdom and clarity from the Twillingate resident.
Being nominated in 2022 by Music NL for Roots/Folk Artist of The Year, it is clear that Waterman has a lot to offer, a feature that’s evident from the first listen of ‘Just Let Me Be Mad’. In it, the listener will be confronted with classic Folk and Country tones, championing acoustic guitars, harmonica and tame drums. Waterman’s charming and expressive vocals really convey the charged lyrical material, the words of a smart and inspired individual with a lot to say.
Describing the lyricism behind the album, Waterman explains: “This album is a collection of songs from the last couple of years, while the world was put on hold, my mind continued to work overtime. I described this album in a recent interview as “all over the place”. At the time I didn’t quite get the gravity of that statement, but now it makes sense, because each song is trying to keep up with my thoughts.”
