We are fairly familiar with Janet Noh; the New York City-based songstress seems to have developed a taste for musical poignancy, something that was noted by us in one of her previous efforts, ‘Love Me More’, described as “a healthy amount of drama and poignancy, delivered with charisma and confidence”. We stand by our words: the talented creative seems to replicate the same songwriting formula in ‘Oh Child’, albeit with a more elegant outlook.
Leaving behind the electronic production featured in previous records, Noh finds a neutral refuge in acoustic ballad territories, layering her evocative, luscious and cathartic vocals over a bed of warm piano chords and bold orchestral textures. The song is a slice of nostalgic goodness, growing in intensity as it goes on. The ending is absolutely stunning, a triumph of cinematic energy combined with Janet’s lyrical glory.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the piece, Noh explains: “It poured out of me at a time when I was parsing through my own childhood trauma and trying to let my inner child know that she was safe. That she could accept love from others and from herself”.
