If there’s one thing Janelle Sy’mone does not need, is fierceness. She’s got plenty already! ‘Good Girl’ is the Atlanta-based talent’s latest effort, a charming and authoritative journey into uplifting RnB and vintage Funk, blending organic matter – such as horns sections and groovy basslines – with modern elements, such as drum machines and hip-hop stylings. The result is a track that blinks an eye to the likes of Beyonce and Alicia Keys, among others.
While the musical matter is fierce and evocative, the lyricism behind the song is decisively more nuanced and fragile, echoing the memory of Sy’mone’s late sister. She explains: “I wrote the lyrics with her attitude and sassiness in mind. She was a force. Embarrassingly enough, this song is loosely based on her lover who cheated on her with a mutual friend.”
Like all great RnB anthems, ‘Good Girl’ focuses on love and broken heart, reiterating the power women hold and their need to remember their force within. Empowering.
