There’s a strong sense of fragility and poignancy in ‘Inward’. A curated, impressive piece of work, the EP showcases James Józef’s blessed artistry, here manifesting through eclectic folk stylings and a certain indietronica flavouring. Featuring four impressive tracks, ‘Inward’ sees the London-based troubadour delving into self-reflection and self-healing, celebrating a positive turning point involving the relationship with his mother.
The record’s sonic livery perfectly mirrors such intimate imagery, wrapping James’ evocative vocals in a myriad of textures, leftfield guitar tones and delicate drum grooves. Oscillating between complex arrangements and more streamlined, catchy gems, ‘Inward’ provides a fitting look into Józef’s musical universe. ‘Mooka’ is a definite stand-out, with its uber-minimal production and an overwhelming sense of sacredness.
Revealing the inspiration behind the record, the gifted musician and songwriter explains: “Making this EP was truly freeing. These songs felt necessary to write and allowed me to reflect and process such an intense part of my upbringing. My hope is that this music serves as a vessel to look deeper within yourself and your own relationships.”
