There’s something special about listening to ‘Less Familiar’ while reading about Jackson’s reasoning behind the making of the album. Essentially a commentary on the ups and downs of his life, the album is truly a work of art, a personal, authentic and honest dive into the American talent’s nuanced existence. Telling a tale of resilience through a few years of pain and loss, ‘Less Familiar’ is a snapshot of the passing of time, with Jackson’s losing some family members, but at the same time getting married.
Sonically, he’s particularly proud of the record. As he explains: “It’s truly the culmination of all the technical skills I’ve learned so far and I’m extremely proud of how it turned out.” Written and self-produced by Jackson himself, ‘Less Familiar’ bathes in alt-folk and Americana waters, eventually putting the onus and the attention on the rich songwriting, with guitar-flavoured arrangements fully supporting it.
Based in Nashville, Jackson is also a multi-instrumentalist, something that tells us a lot about his musical prowess. Speaking with Nashville’s Voyager Magazine, he shares a few more details about his artistic goals: “I love experimenting to discover new and unique sounds, melodies, and rhythms that support the lyrical content of a song and vice versa, and then using those elements to bring the song to life.”
