Some spend their life looking for love, only to find it when they had already given up on it. Sounds familiar? Connecticut-based songster J. Matthews thinks so too, so much so to have written an entire song about it. Drawing inspiration from a moment of unexpected human connection, the young talent shares ‘For You’, a modern pop gem with a knack for honey-like melodies and a certain intimate character. Built over EDM and synth-pop influences, the track also makes use of acoustic guitars, resulting in a friendly, relatable and uplifting record.
Crowning it all, we find Matthews’ relatable and evocative vocals, the perfect timbre for such an expressive song. He’s able to control his intensity, only to really charge it up in the chorus, quite a catchy and emotional hook. Lyrically, the record seeks to highlight the magical feeling of falling in love unexpectedly, drawing inspiration from its author’s personal experience. Meeting a girl he connected with almost instantly, Matthews explains: “Everyone has an image in their heads of what their ideal partner would be, and we hope and pray that we find that person someday. We’ve already fallen for them, but we don’t always get the chance to meet them in real life. I was waiting to fall for her in real life, and I was lucky enough to find her and have that happen”.
That fortunate encounter inspired the wonderful single we are able to hear today, a true testament to the American talent’s sensibility and songwriting prowess. If poignant and sentimental pop is what gets you going, you should give ‘For You’ a chance.
