It’s interesting to observe how teenage lyricism is often themed around challenges, struggles and existential angst. It is a pivotal time in all our lives. Perhaps you could say that growth is – at its very essence – a complex process, that inevitably brings conflict into the mix. J. Matthews knows it very well, reversing all his frustrations into a relatable and intense EP, ‘Courage’. The American musician and songwriter champions a pretty peculiar sonic outlook, blending punk-rock aesthetic with synth-powered elements, managing to create an original and compelling musical formula.
Introduced by ‘Courage for Fools’, the EP starts with understated attitude, moving at a slow pace while providing the perfect starting point for Matthews’ fierce yet poignant artistic journey. Notably, the track also alternative organic drums to conventional hip-hop beats, showcasing the general eclecticism contained in the project.
‘Wanderlust’ keeps the record in emotional territories, introduced by artificial textures and a charming acoustic guitar. Flavoured with 90s throwback vibes, the song is a mellow masterpiece. ‘For You’ and ‘Nothing to Fear’ reveals even more about J. Matthews’ alternative side, featuring increased electronic-based matter and pop lyricism. Crowning the whole EP, we find the American talent’s vocals, dynamic, fuzzy yet quite evocative.
