Defining his musical output as ‘Cynical rock’, Ivan Beecroft maintains a critical look at the reality around him, all expressed through wholesome musical stylings and electrifying rock idioms. Perhaps inspiring some of his listeners, the Australian songwriter champions rebellious lyricism, analysing recent history and highlighting the problematic nature of some of our collective choices.
‘Carousel’ is the strongest evidence of that: Beecroft’s latest effort, the track takes a cue from the recent pandemic lockdowns in Melbourne, trying to make sense of such a painful experience. Over a bed of grunge and garage-flavoured alt-rock bonanza, Ivan layers charming vocals, delivered with a certain fuzziness and grittiness. Bold and intense, ‘Carousel’ is not a record one forgets easily, even just for its lyrical relevance.
Speaking about the inspiration behind it, Beecroft explains: “‘Carousel’ was written and recorded two months into the start of Melbourne’s controversial extended lockdowns. The inspiration for the song came from rereading George Orwell’s 1984 the month before – the song seemed to write itself one day in my dining room”.
