Writing about German songstress IRYS a few months ago, we proudly declared: “What has always impressed us about the Berlin native is her proud DIY aesthetic. An attitude that’s paying off, with IRYS becoming a skilled producer and a mesmerising songwriter. It’s time for the big industry boys to start paying attention: she’s clearly meant for bigger and greater things.” Further evidence of that statement being true lies in the project’s latest single, ‘Waiting Syndrome’.
A relatively short track, it relies on IRYS’ strengths, offering retrowave-inspired beats and icy guitars. In the chorus, we catch a glimpse of modern electronica and a slight techno flair, perhaps a new attitude in the German talent’s music. For 2023, we expect her to explore neighbouring territories; she’s looking ready for new adventures and directions.
Describing the lyrical concept behind the track, IRYS explains: “My own mind is my biggest cheerleader – and sometimes my biggest enemy. I have phases where I sabotage my progress by trusting the unproductive voice in my head. This is what ‘Waiting Syndrome’ is about – a state of agony caused by a battle between the two polar voices in my head!“
