There’s a special kindness in Imelda Kehoe’s latest album, ‘Leave Your Light On’. It’s not positivity, but rather peaceful wisdom, the intense yet gentle outlook of a talented artist that has come to accept the many ways life can hurt us and confuse us. And so, through eight wonderful folk pieces, Kehoe reveals introspective tales of personal experience, encompassing human consciousness and our collective fragility.
In particular, ‘Leave Your Light On’ was created in the aftermath of her brother’s death due to melanoma. The album reflects on Imelda’s and her family’s effort to support him during his illness, being there with him during his final moments. Such poignancy and grief is something we are extremely respectful of, and as such we are grateful to Imelda for allowing us – the listeners – to access such transformative and life-changing lyrical material. In fact, Kehoe lets us into her private world, doing so with soothing folk arrangements and nuanced vocals.
While drawing inspiration from such heavy material, ‘Leave Your Light On’ captures Imelda’s ability to channel her emotions into art and create something beautiful and inspiring. The album serves as a reminder to cherish life, even in the face of loss and adversity.
