The keen reader will gladly remember Prague-based creative IKON. Writing about ‘MIND’ earlier this year, we proudly declared it “nostalgic and familiar, yet interesting and refreshing in its execution”. Now, the talented artist returns with an even bigger record, a comprehensive look at all the eclecticism and the passionate melodies that inform IKON’s nuanced work. ‘MUSIC’ is his latest album, and as one can imagine, it’s a triumph.
The second LP to emerge from the project’s catalogue, the record focuses on the IKON’s usual Eastern Soul character, further influenced by Disco and Electronic influences. This results in groovy and uplifting pop gems, often built on anthemic, giant beats and sultry, evocative vocals. Opener tracks ‘CRAZY’ and ‘CITY’ showcase that very well: one is a hip-hop-flavoured, mid-tempo tune, while the other enters with both feet in dancy territories, yet maintains a charming horn section which screams soul and acid jazz.
Further along, ‘MAN’ seems to be getting close to techno territories, something that we would not expect from IKON. If synthpop is your jam, you’ll find a welcome refuge in ‘MOON’, a synthwave-flavoured piece with tons of cathartic aura and electrifying vibes. Speaking about the album and his wider outlook on life, the European musician explains: “It’s meant to be lived to the fullest. Happy or sad, you’re never alone. Music brings us all together.”
