Here’s another incredibly interesting one for all you music lovers to really sink your teeth into! ‘Rue’ is the debut album from Sydney-based musical project Idiosyncratic, and I guarantee that it’s unlike anything you’ve heard before. Dark, emotional, and cryptic, it’s a record that focuses on seriously heavy themes like mental collapse, regret, depression, and suicide. Narrated by scratchy vocal samples courtesy of noir films from the 1920s and 40s, ‘Rue’ dives deep into the nostalgias of hauntology, an idea developed by well-known French philosopher Jacques Derrida.
With the vast majority of instrumentation recorded on vintage microphones and mixing consoles, Idiosyncratic especially designed synth patches that would evoke a liminal response. Being inspired by the liminal movement of 2020, they also decided to process most of the recording through two-inch tape and vintage processing equipment. A purist of the very highest order!
Reminiscent of acts like Boards of Canada and The Caretaker, Idiosyncratic is an artist who will take some time getting used to. Often…the best ones do. Once you’re there though, and you can appreciate their sound, there’s just no turning back! Unique, eerie, superb!
