Housewife Playfully Explores Grief and Loss in ‘Matilda’

The keen reader will certainly remember Canadian up-and-comers Housewife. Writing about ‘Work Song’ not long ago, Mesmerized celebrated the single as “constantly oscillating between melancholia and euphoria”, a narrative that well adapts to the project’s vibrant, imaginative artistry. Following up on a string of singles, Housewife has recently unveiled her full EP ‘Girl Of The Hour’, out now via Submarine Cat Records.

Collecting all of Housewife’s recent body of work, the record also carries a brand-new offering, ‘Matilda’, a hard-hitting, potent alt-pop piece with a truly hypnotising outlook. Wrapped into a cool and contemporary indie-pop livery, the track also showcases a strong ‘indietronica’ character, with an understated, evocative quality that comes to a full resolution in the stunning chorus.

Of course, Housewife’s vocals are rather unique, delivered with a quirky nonchalant tone, yet one that we’d never be tired of hearing. Speaking about the inspiration behind ‘Matilda’, the Canadian voyager explains: “‘Matilda was inspired by my bike getting stolen a couple of years ago. I was an avid cyclist for years and really loved that bike (and had nicknamed it Matilda). Obviously, the song isn’t just about a bike, but also an allegory for grief and loss, and missing something or someone you can’t have anymore. I think everyone, cyclists or not, can relate to that grief, and the struggle of moving on from things in their past, as I still haven’t replaced the bike to this day.”
