The keen reader will be already familiar with Hounds Haul, having appeared on our pages not long ago, with their previous effort ‘Under Glacial’, a single that signalled their return to the scene after a relatively short hiatus. We stand by our words: Hounds Haul possesses a unique and charming flair, building modern indie with touches of electronica and a strong pop character. Lucky for us, the band is now releasing their first single of 2023, ‘Odyssey’. The record is pretty crucial in understanding their current artistry, being the second instalment of a creative trilogy that started with the previous release. Explaining how the project focuses on “exploration and escapism”, mixing pandemic survival with mythological figures, the group showcases not only musical and instrumental prowess but also a certain cultural weight, allowing them to explore the depth of human consciousness.
‘Odyssey’ contains everything you would expect from Hounds Haul, although shifting to harder, alt-rock-based horizons. An eclectic sound balanced over epic indie rock, alt-influences and relatable lyricism. Punchy distortions and deep drums provide a fitting sonic backdrop for the band’s near-perfect lead vocals, engaging, evocative and dynamic. A project to watch out for!
