When we approached ‘Glass’, we couldn’t believe our ears. There’s such a heart-shaking intensity in the group’s latest single, as if they were able to extract raw energy from their deepest feelings. It is all echoed by a glorious wall of distorted guitars, occasionally leaving space for evocative and sleazy lead vocals. The general sonic formula is almost irresistible, and frankly, we do believe Hotspit to be one of the hottest bands we have heard this year. There’s a certain simplicity in their music, yet they manage to make it feel heavy, meaningful and poignant, perhaps thanks to particular tone choices.
‘Glass’ is also the title track of Hotspit’s latest EP, ‘Memory of a Mirror Image’, which reflects on the complex and often turbulent nature of relationships. The EP’s artwork and song titles explore the concept of a mirror, and how we use it to reflect on our past selves and our memories. It also draws a comparison between Narcissus and our own attempts at self-reflection.
Lyrically, ‘Glass’ delves into the feelings of worry and embarrassment that we often experience when we reflect upon our past experiences. It is a reminder that even the recognition of these feelings is part of the same cycle of self-orientation.
