HOPE are at it again. Soldiers of the darkness, wizards of the introspective, the German band has long championed a mysterious and hypnotising outlook centred around gritty low tones and obscure new-wave-flavoured guitars. ‘Fractals’ is the perfect evidence of it, a minimal, murky and doomy gem built over abstract textures and sparse, repetitive vocal features. The result is a listening experience that completely captures the listener, offering a fleeting moment of shadowy reflection.
‘Fractals’ is in fact taken from HOPE’s new album, ‘Navel’, out now. In it, the keen artistic explorer will be able to immerse completely in the group’s mesmerising material, along with fiery and fuzzy synthetisers, glitchy drums and atmospheric guitar tones. Quite an experimental record, to be fair: HOPE really delve into the obscurity of their identities this time, pushing the boundaries of what was expected from them.
Perhaps inspired by the industrial outlook of their German base, Berlin, the band matches such an eerie sonic charge with equally haunting lyricism, as lead singer Christine Börsch-Supan explains about ‘Fractals’: “It’s about disentangling attachments and finally moving on. The space that is then, all of a sudden, free.”
