‘Old Days’ is the cracking and grungy new single from Bristol-based independent rockers Hole Tripper. The band admit that it does present a somewhat different sonic landscape compared to their prior work, but that timeless essence of Hole Tripper’s signature sound still seamlessly resonates throughout! Rich, hard-hitting, and soul-stirring, ‘Old Days’ leans on early 90s alternative rock and grunge for inspiration, and the Layne Staley-sounding chorus just seals the deal for me! The addition of a voice-over courtesy of Zen master Alan Watts is another masterstroke, and fits in perfectly with the track’s overall theme.
Lyrically, Hole Tripper say that the tune is about “being sick of looking backwards, getting into a fight with death, punching it in the face, and then powering on”. Yes, the old days are no more, but it’s vital to not get stuck in a negative whirlpool. Punch your way through it! Keep moving forward!
Inviting the listener to break free from the shackles of nostalgia and forge a resolute path ahead, ‘Old Days’ is undoubtedly one of my songs of the year! I’ve missed a crunchy guitar riff and soaring vocals of late, and all I can do is thank this super-talented bunch for their new track. I can’t wait to hear what they get up to next!
