One of the things that strikes us the most when listening to ‘forgive me’ is its expansive, character and eclectic flavouring. For instance, the record benefits from a minimal and luscious production, quite R&B and contemporary. Then, HMyna’s evocative and lush vocals enter the sonic picture, exhibiting a deep and dark tone, very hypnotising and vibrant.
Based on the record’s flavourings, we would expect a lighter tone, but here’s where HMyna’s heightened eclecticism comes into play. Based in London with French and Brazilian roots, the talented songstress is the definition of a ‘melting pot’: having experienced a substantial number of cultures, she’s now able to draw strengths where she most sees fit, creating something extraordinary and relatable.
Of course, as we are told, such a variety of references also causes HMyna to embark on a search for belonging and identity, something that comes up a lot in her songwriting. Speaking about the inspiration behind the record, she explains: “‘Forgive me’ is about asking for forgiveness for who I’ve been at times when my head was fighting my heart. I share a side of me no one has ever seen before, It’s out of my comfort zone but perfectly in it all at once.”
