Love, loss, and the transformative power of music: these are all integral components of Portland-based band Hiroki. Led by AAPI duo Salvatore Manalo and Matt Brewster, Hiroki is one of those discoveries that always feel very welcome. Their signature style, drawing from the classics while looking to the future, will instantly captivate the listener, then ultimately conquered by their honey-like melodies and evocative and luscious vocal tones.
‘Tell Me (When You’re Gone)’ is Hiroki’s latest effort, a heartfelt love song inspired by the classic experience of having someone “get away” – as they describe it. There’s a strong element of elegance in the track: channelling old-school RnB and jazzy licks, ‘Tell Me’ is a refined exercise in late-night organic vibes. Charming clean guitars echo Benson-like riffing, while steady and groovy drums drive the song forward, creating the perfect framework for Manalo and Brewster’s vocals, the perfect fit for such gooey musical material.
A classic R&B sound with a sexy vibe and heartfelt lyricism that will make you want to move and feel. Whether it’s the nostalgia of a past love or the joy of a new one, ‘Tell Me’ is a song that speaks to the soul and transports listeners to a place of warmth and understanding.
There’s no denying the brilliance of Hiroki’s approach to creating music. From their exploration of ambient textures to their thoughtful songwriting and production, their music is a testament to their skill and passion. A worthy discovery.
