Signal from the universe is one of the most interesting records we have received this week. It is bold, quirky and hyper-authentic, a wonderful nugget of experimentation and leftfield sentiment. Penned by Dutch creative Hipster Pug, ‘Signal from the Universe’ is extremely eclectic and expansive. Built on electronica, ambient and neo-classical elements, the album places itself in-between genres, yet it doesn’t feel forced at all, it simply wraps the listeners into a cathartic and introspective listening experience.
The underlying concept is simple but effective. Taking inspiration from Wes Anderson’s ‘Three Parts Structure’, Hipster Pug divides ‘Signal from the Universe’ into three acts, each one boasting a slightly different sonic character. In Act 1 – defined as “The signal, represents change” – the vibe is pretty dramatic and mysterious, packed with noise and industrial textures. In act 2 – “The cave of memories, is about letting go of the past and looking forward to what you would like” – Hipster Pug shares a much more introspective and reflective take on his material, making ample use of large soundscapes and ambient solutions.
Act 3 – “New beginnings, the self-explanatory new start” – the long-awaited resolutions, a look to the future with hope and resilience. The vibe here is more uplifting and cinematic, taking the record to its natural close. We are aware that this album is not for everyone. It’s a niche, intricate body of work that will appeal to a specific number of listeners around the world. They are lucky, as listening to ‘Signal from the Universe’ is a wonderfully enriching experience.
