There’s a lot of great stuff coming over from the European shores these days. We particularly enjoy when artists decline mainstream formulas following national sensibilities, as it gives way to truly eclectic, unique offerings. ‘Dajan’ is the perfect example of that. A monumental, hypnotising piece, the track blends Hildá Länsman’s rap and Sámi joik vocals with Tuomas Norvio’s gripping, nuanced electronic production.
The result is a hard-hitting, catchy record, one that feels rather cathartic and mysterious, as if the listeners were to witness a magical, sacred ancient ritual steeped in Nordic energy. ‘Dajan’ is taken from the homonymous album, delving deeper into the collaboration between Länsman and Norvio. In it, the sonic palette is more expansive and substantial, with tons of soundscapes and spoken word being thrown into the spotlight. It’s the perfect balance between tradition and futurism.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the single, the Finnish songstress explains: “‘Dajan’ is a holistic embrace to connect with one’s inner world, ancestry and self-determination. Questions presented connected to both our collective and individual healing, survival and empowerment. We’re living in times when Sámi culture is presented mostly through activism. These are important political matters that have been discussed throughout the years.”
