We appreciate it when a record has both strong lyricism and incredible production. ‘Young Man’ fits that paradigm perfectly, laying buttery-smooth and meaningful vocals by Kansas City-based creative Highrise, and infectious, catchy production by prominent duo Kontrabandz. The pair does a good job of packing lush, chill vibes with vibrant and cathartic songwriting, sending a potent message to all young men out there – a message that’s very much needed, especially nowadays.
Motivating the listeners to leave the past behind, not allowing old flaws to influence the present, ‘Young Man’ is a rather simple song, at least on the surface, yet it’s very effective and relatable. As Highrise explains: “a message to younger men about the weight of past mistakes following them into the future”. Such potent imagery is further inspired by the American troubadour’s own personal experience. Having overcome some painful moments, Highrise rose to the occasion, taking responsibility for his actions and future goals, particularly influenced by a grandfatherly figure.
Constantly oscillating between heartwarming hip-hop elements and pop-flavoured melodies, ‘Young Man’ finds its unique character over an elegant, bouncy beat, drenched in acoustic guitars and popular sonic solutions. Overall, the record is the positive anthem we all need in those challenging times.
