Hickory Shares Complex Album ‘Batten Down the Hatches’

It’s rather hard to pinpoint a definite genre for ‘Batten Down the Hatches’. Rather, the album takes up a wider space in the musical spectrum, exploring the many nuances and characteristics that Hickory seems to so proudly champion. From the indietronica-flavoured opener, ‘Adrift’, it is clear there’s a certain tension informing the whole record. On one side, we find the American’s duo heartfelt and poignant lyricism, on the other, leftfield arrangements with strong leftfield electronica roots.

It is this ambivalence that helps ‘Batten Down the Hatches’ reach a heavenly status: a constant push and pull that makes it impossible for the user to stop listening, hypnotised by the majestic nature of such colourful music. ‘Hold Me Down’ is another compelling example: built over anthemic vocal harmonies, the track is drenched in gritty and cerebral soundscapes, making for a dramatic, almost theatrical outlook.

Featuring musician and songwriters Gabriel Stern and Peter Mark Kendall, Hickory are clearly enjoying their limitless creative sessions, successfully delivering material that’s brave and forward-thinking. In particular, ‘Batten Down the Hatches’ was conceived during the pandemic, channelling the isolation, confusion, and political upheaval that seems to be rampant at the time.
