‘Running’ is undoubtedly one of the most engrossing and intriguing tunes I’ve come across this year. Courtesy of Calgary-based artist, composer, and producer Michael Valenzuela, who performs under the moniker of Her Motives Are Silent, it’s an eerie and haunting downtempo piece of music.
A rich and textured sonic experience, the melancholic offering finds inspiration in acts like Nine Inch Nails, Crosses, and Radiohead. With an almost unsettling vibe, ‘Running’ pulls the listener into its dark and atmospheric world, delivering a chilling encounter that stays with you well after the last note fades.
A unique blend of alternative, orchestral, and electronic elements, Michael’s sound has drawn comparisons to the likes of Amon Tobin, Ólafur Arnalds, and Copeland. Not bad company to keep if you ask me.
Challenging the listener to question what they are running from, the track thematically deals with facing one’s fears and processing anxiety. It’s a thought-provoking exploration of the human psyche wrapped in a hauntingly dark yet beautiful soundscape that I find myself constantly returning to. A true work of art, ‘Running’ is quickly becoming one of my favourite discoveries of the year!
