Diving into Helena Ros’ short yet substantial catalogue, one can only appreciate the eclectic and expansive character of the Swiss creative. Now based in Mexico City, the talented songstress has so far released ‘My Life’, ‘Purple Mind’ and – just last week – ‘Where I’ll meet you’. It’s this last single we are particularly drawn to: a liminal, cathartic effort, the track packs gentle haunting, intense energy, all steeped into spoken words and evocative, retro-flavoured production.
There’s a certain amount of cinematic flair in it, but overall Ros fully captures the listeners’ attention with her dynamic, luscious vocal tone, perfectly at home in switching from spoken words to melodic singing in a heartbeat. The listening experience is sacred, nuanced and meaningful, calling for personal reflection and mystical escapism. Nevertheless, there’s also groove and rhythm in it, echoing Helena’s most soulful, funk-oriented side.
We are fascinated by Ros’ ability to constantly oscillate between genres and references, creating the perfect marriage between tradition and futurism.
