There’s something special about the way Helena May manages to engage her listeners. Although ‘Sweet Memories’ is just a record, it feels so vibrant and vivid, intensively groovy and electrifying. That’s what keeps us coming back to the Welsh songstress’ music, some of the best acid jazz and soul we have heard in years. Released as a live version, ‘Sweet Memories’ gives us a deep glimpse into May’s nuanced artistry.
Always armed with her stunningly powerful vocals, Helena rallies around her a talented pool of musicians (some boasting experiences with Joss Stone, Jamiroquai and Incognito, among others), intending to film a live session in the legendary Metropolis Studios. The result is as good as one can easily predict. Featuring a charming horn section, ‘Sweet Memories’ shifts into big band gear, perfectly blending tradition with modernity.
Taken from May’s upcoming album ‘Puzzle Pieces’, the single is a worthy listening experience. Plus, with footage from the live session available on YouTube, we have the chance to witness musical greatness – the level of musicianship here is absolutely mindblowing!
