‘Dodging Arrows’ is quite a curious offering. First built on playful and uplifting electro-pop stylings, it then evolves into a darker, more nuanced entity, letting the intensity grow before shifting into its final gear – an all-out dancy disco anthem. We’d say that there’s a strong duality in the instrumental, a sort of chiaroscuro approach that’s charming and mysterious.
Coincidentally, the same dualism can be found at a lyrical level too, with ‘Dodging Arrows’ being molded around a traditional Irish myth about love, betrayal, entrapment and self-determination, ‘Deirdre of the Sorrows’. Such deep storytelling contrasts with the track’s sonic livery, way lighter and positive (at least on the surface). Overall, this constant contrast seems to be working well, making for a deep and interesting listening experience.
Hawk Jupiter is the talented producer and creative behind the record; hailing from Carlow, Ireland, he joins forces with up with fellow musician Lauren Davis, here lending her evocative and cathartic vocals to the song. Look out for the music video, out on Friday the 14th of June.
