Hawk Björn Shares Wise, Personal Album ‘Alchemy’

Our impression of ‘Alchemy’ is rather complex: a nuanced, vibrant album, the record embraces a wide lyrical perspective by exploring the intricate nature of life. Penned by Vancouver-based troubadour Hawk Björn, the album maintains a mysterious outlook even by its author’s words: “This album is deeply personal, to the point I’d rather let the music and lyrics speak for themselves.”

What we think has likely happened, is that ‘Alchemy’ is simply the product of generational wisdom, a collection of experiences (painful and positive) accumulated by Björn in his lifetime. Having reached a notable age, he’s in the right artistic place to make that happen. That’s why it is so personal: listeners will interpret and relate to each song in their own way. That – we reckon – is precious, incredible songwriting value.

From a sonic standpoint, ‘Alchemy’ benefits from Hawk’s Swedish roots, embracing honey-like melodies and perfect pop phrasing. The result is a friendly and expansive record, which we are confident will connect with a wide slice of music fans. Perhaps its character is on the nostalgic side, echoing a power-pop extravaganza, especially when it comes to the many stunning vocal harmonies.
