Lush, expressive and intensely dreamy, ‘Astral’ is a highly relevant and hard-hitting piece, a stunning nugget of poignancy and nostalgia wrapped in expansive tones and spacious vocals. Penned by New York-based producer and musician Harris Mac, the track also carries a rather evocative and meaningful origin story. Born out of a bucolic summer, ‘Astral’ was written in a farmhouse in upstate New York, where Harris moved to find peace and inspiration.
It worked: reacting to an old piano left on the property, Mac went back and forth between that piano and his Roland Juno 60, crafting a composition balanced between tradition and futurism, eventually standing on its own, occupying its uniquely timeless spot. Meanwhile, a temporary romance blessed the music with introspection and tenderness. The resulting listening experience is gentle and elegant, yet also striking and emotional. We wouldn’t be mad if one were to shed a tear…
‘Astral’ is taken from Harris Mac’s overarching album ‘Oneonta’, out now. Speaking about the inspiration behind the single, he explains: “After dating this girl for a while, we split up, and I was still pretty tender about the whole thing for a long time after. Every time I worked on the song, I would still feel that magic summer where we met in the countryside and played in the woods and the river. It was a beautiful feeling tinged with heartbreak, and I wanted to put that into the song.”
