Haqibatt Find Their Sound with ‘L’Electronique des Songes’

Jeremy Bregman

Haqibatt is an ambient electronic duo made up of percussionist Selma Doyen and bassist Christophe Piquet. Based in Strasbourg, France, the duo released their debut album entitled ‘L’Electronique des Songes’ on October 22nd. It’s a colourful, experimental, and leftfield piece of work that, as far as I’m concerned, is simply too intriguing to ignore. The album is the culmination of six months’ worth of hard work, as the duo clarified and refined their sound and vision of electro-jazz-groove.

The album’s opener, ‘La Quête des Palmipèdes’, sets the tone beautifully, with its dreamy, soothing, and hypnotic soundscape. It’s also jazzy, electronic, and even a little funky at times. I know this sounds like something of a contradiction, and that’s why you just have to experience it for yourself.

Standing at nine minutes and forty-six seconds long is ‘Recto Verso’. A tune so experimental, original, and fresh, that I feel like I could write an entire essay on it alone. Maybe another day.

‘L’Electronique des Songes’ is yet another album that, without being introduced to it, I most likely would not have come across. That’s the joy of doing this. Discovering incredible new artists like Haqibatt and forming a connection with their music.
