The attentive reader will remember Hannah Elkins, British songstress now based in Berlin. Her previous single ‘Moving in the City’ was an absolute delight. Fresh, edgy, groovy and catchy. It had it all. With newly-found inspiration, Elkins shuffles her artistic cards by releasing a poignant, heartfelt ballad, ‘Her’.
While the record takes a step back from her current sonic direction, it also helps us appreciate the full extent of Elkins’ talent. We can fully admire her vocals: so, precise, yet malleable. Capable of a magnificent extension, it is no wonder why the track gives us goosebumps. Just wait for the chorus. Her songwriting is on point too; never falling into cliches, Hannah pursues true artistic blessing, and she reaches it. Recalling the harsh experience of letting someone dear go, the song declares “I wish the best for you, I wish it for her too, time to let go”.
Piano ballads might not be your thing, but we bet you’ll love ‘Her’ anyway. Just give Hannah Elkins a chance.
