Introduced by rather dark and eerie bass tones, ‘Lorelei’ grows in intensity very slowly, layering noisy drum grooves with arpeggiated synthetisers and distorted guitars. The result is an electro-rock anthem that feels quite industrial and gritty, while maintaining its evocative and passionate outlook, so fiercely driven forward by Hana Piranha’s luscious, powerful vocals.
There’s quite a contrast between the understated verses, built on deep, dark sonic matter, and the anthemic, punchy choruses, where Piranha can delve into electro-rock glory. It does make sense with the lyricism contained in the song; ‘Lorelei’ depicts the painful story of an abusive relationship, with such discomfort and misery fully mirrored in the musical counterpart.
Quite a showcase for Hana Piranha. If you like what you hear, stay tuned for the project’s upcoming album, ‘Wingspan’, expected soon. Speaking about the inspiration behind the single, the Brighton-based songstress explains: “‘Lorelei’ was inspired by my ex-boyfriend, who I was in a really abusive relationship with. I feel lucky to have actually survived that relationship, it was just really dark, so the song is about that quite explicitly.”
