A vibrant, empowering and cathartic piece, ‘Graves’ is a truly meaningful offering, a piece that perfectly fits the end of the year – a time when many of us go through a process of reckoning and change. The willpower and resilience showcased by Hamilton Hound – the talented creative behind the single – is frankly quite impressive. Narrating his challenging time in school coupled with personal struggles, the English artist is living proof of how much growing up can change things for the better, and of the fact that we are, ultimately, making our own luck.
Featuring producer James Mason and guest vocalist Liz Arcane, ‘Graves’ sees Hamilton Hound engage in charming, evocative spoken word, with Arcane’s hazy and nostalgic vocals packing the space with BVs and adlibs. From a sonic standpoint, the record is rather soulful and melancholic, and moving at a slow pace – the perfect match for such hard-hitting lyricism.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the song, Hamilton Hound explains: “This track is deeply personal to me. Growing up in a working-class Kent town, I faced school as an overweight kid in the 80’s with undiagnosed ADHD, using humour to cope. Leaving with no qualifications and low expectations from others, education was a process, not an achievement like for many others. Tenacity led me to a successful career. Music has always been my therapy.”
