Change is an important – if not essential – part of everyone’s existence. The ability to switch our references, our beliefs and our passion: it’s all crucial towards finding our true, unfiltered self. London songstress H A Z E knows it very well, having embarked on a journey to find her artistic identity. Debuting in 2020 with ‘King’, the talented newcomer has been exploring electronic, pop and cinematic bays, resetting the tables quite a few times.
Following up from a string of releases in 2021, H A Z E returned earlier this year with a game-changing EP, ‘Future/Past’. In it, the listener will discover an alternative, more electronic side to the London resident. Dark, gloomy, nostalgic and introspective: H A Z E offers her pure inner self over a bed of brooding, eclectic electronica, balanced between techno influences and pop lyricism. The results are staggering and feel like the definite step up of a clearly gifted musical artist.
Opener ‘Mv’ sees the project layering distorted guitar solos, trip-hop beats and a gritty synth bass, making for a particularly exciting arrangement. H A Z E’s vocals and refined songwriting bring the song home, a truly poignant anthem. ‘Shadow’ takes the pace and the intensity down, giving us a glimpse into soothing cinematic tones and long, sustained vocal notes. ‘Owe Me’ continues in the same direction, featuring Reckless Jacks on guest vocals. ‘Anywhere but Here’ brings the record to a close in elegant fashion, offering a nuanced and suggestive piece, anthemic pop at its best. H A Z E’s evocative and luscious vocals help with the intensity.
