We had quite a poignant experience listening to Guild Theory. The British rock outfit has just released their latest effort, ‘Streaks of Light Burn the Sky’, a long album with an intense and cathartic outlook. It’s introspective music, the fitting soundtrack for a dive into your own self, with all the nostalgia and painful emotions that might come with it. That’s what happened to us. We set out to experience the record, and while the opener track ‘Cackled Smile’ was playing, we got kidnapped into our own thoughts. Memories of a fragile past resurfaced, giving Guild Theory’s guitar-powered soundscapes a whole new meaning. Instantly, we could connect to them, we could understand their artistic universe. We loved it.
We replayed ‘Cackled Smile’ for a while, but like with all things in life, one must eventually move on. ‘Free From You’ was next on the menu: a more alt-rock-oriented offering, the track gave us a glimpse of the band’s lead vocals, so relatable yet haunting and dark. ‘Rust’ is a fitting change of pace and tempo, taking the listener into full dramatic territories. Distortion takes a break, showcasing the group’s wide scope of action. Breaking free from genre restraints, they pursue authentic lyrical expression, taking the music wherever their emotions might be headed to.
Echoing the likes of Interpol and Oceansize, Guild Theory might live in the past, some might say. Even so, it’s a glorious and cathartic past, the kind we would really like to be in.
