Griffin Robillard Shares Introspective LP ‘Big Pisces Energy’

If we had to describe ‘Big Pisces Energy’ with a word, we’d choose ‘captivating’. This is because as soon as you start listening, you’ll realise you cannot stop. Griffin Robillard’s material is so good – almost irresistible. A dynamic gooey of kaleidoscopic tones, indie lo-fi goodness, new-wave energy: everything concurs into making ‘Big Pisces Energy’ the stunning record it is. Having partaken in SXSW just earlier this year, Robillard’s career is quickly taking off, a clear sign he’s onto something great.

‘Big Pisces Energy’ gets an anthemic introduction, opened by the title track in a triumph of electronic textures and nostalgic synthetisers (M83 style, we’d dare say). ‘Laws of Longing’ soon picks up the pace, delivering retrowave vibes mixed with Robillard’s deep, evocative vocal tone, so intense yet so controlled. ‘Anyone Else’ widens the musical scope, with a more nuanced and introspective offering, perhaps channelling some Bowie energy, especially in its slow-paced evolution.

We won’t spoil much more, for now: what’s important is to truly understand the importance of Griffin’s debut EP, a work of art that reflects not only in its sonic framework but also in the lyrical element, a passionate reflection over Robilliard’s own life experiences. Fresh from a broken engagement, the Brooklyn talent reversed all his frustration and overall angst into a creative outlet – that’s how ‘Big Pisces Energy’ was born.

As Griffin explains: “I’d never been more depressed. My life felt like it was in a million pieces. Even then, I so badly wanted to feel alive. These tunes are about the struggle to live the life you want, falling in love, dusting yourself off, and living your own truth no matter the cost.”
