If you’ve been following my work, firstly, thank you! Secondly, and more importantly, you’ll know I’m a little obsessed with the recent sounds coming out of Nashville, Tennessee. Earlier this month, I came across a tune called ‘Petty Drama’, presented by a singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist known only as GRAVA. It’s unlike anything I’ve heard to be completely honest, and it’s pure brilliance from start to finish.
Leaning into experimental and artistic pop sounds with elements of alternative rock, ‘Petty Drama’ is not just a song, it’s a dramatic piece of art. A haunting and deeply immersive offering, it’s a track inspired by GRAVA’s personal experience with mean girls. “‘Petty Drama’ is about refusing to partake in other people’s drama,” she says. “It exaggerates the theatrics that you’re being pulled into”.
GRAVA’s vocal performance on the track is truly mindblowing, and it’s incredible what a punch she packs in just two and a half minutes. Truthfully, it’s a tune that I’m finding hard to put a label on. It kind of just has to be experienced to be fully understood and appreciated. What I can say, however, is that I cannot get it out of my head, and can’t wait to hear from GRAVA again!
