‘My Lovely Enemy’ is definitely one of the most original, quirky and authentic offerings we have heard in a while. Drenched in theatrical, evocative energy, the record seems to transport listeners into a bright, charismatic cinematic universe, resembling the likes of a musical or a very hectic soundtrack. Penned by multi-talented artist Grace McLean, the track perfectly resonates with her ethos. Being an accomplished actor, songwriter, singer and overall performer, it’s only natural for the record to be packed with such electrifying energy. It just feels alive – and it’s contagious.
Sonically, ‘My Lovely Enemy’ is as eclectic as it could, with organic and playful percussions stacked against a heavenly horn section and some very cinematic and retro-sounding strings. The result is a musical picture that greatly favours McLean’s nuanced and malleable vocals, constantly modulating in intensity and pitch. Quite the listening experience.
Describing the inspiration behind the song, Grace explains: “This song is inspired by a poem of 12th-Century mystic Hildegard von Bingen, about Saint Ursula’s martyrdom. It made me see the scene of martyrdom as a marriage ceremony, and I recognized that in adjusting the frame from mourning to celebration I could imagine the joy in relenting to and accepting sacrifice or loss.”
