“I have learned more about myself writing this EP than I did in therapy,” says UK-based singer/songwriter and songstress Gilan. ‘Goddess Unwilling’ is the EP in question and features four original tracks all recorded, produced, and mixed by the artist herself. The album’s opener, ‘Forward Fold’, starts off on a mellow and euphonious footing. Gilan then introduces her rich, soul-piercing vocals, before getting experimental with the mixer and crunchier with the guitar. It’s an effortless and wonderful transition from a clearly gifted musician.
‘Fall in Line’ is the EP’s second tune and features a haunting, almost eerie soundscape. The guitar is played at a much more rapid pace this time, and Gilan showcases her skill and musical virtuosity. It’s really quite something to behold!
‘Something Else’ and ‘Pieces’ complete ‘Goddess Unwilling’ and if I’m being honest, I could write an essay on each of them. They are both beautiful, tender, authentic, genuine, and just breathtaking.
Taking inspiration from the likes of Fiona Apple, Aldous Harding, Radiohead, and Sevdaliza, Gilan has arrived with a message to be heard and a sound of her own. We have no doubt we’ll be hearing a lot more from her in the very near future!
