We have written about Giant Killers extensively in the past year or so. Following up on their heyday era in the 90s, The British outfit had a lot to make up for, fiercely embarking on a journey of reckoning with their past while keeping an eye on the future. In fact, Giant Killers are now returning with a rather contemporary-sounding offering, a playful nugget of euphoria steeped into particularly impressive memories.
‘One for Georgie’ references George Best, the Manchester Utd poster boy of the mid-60s and 70s who passed away 20 years ago this year. As the story goes, the song was originally presented to MCA back in the day and pre-selected as a potential single. This led to the band actually meeting Best, and then sharing a tumultuous night out in Fulham together. From a sonic standpoint, they seek to mirror such a fierce memory with a rich, horns-flavoured livery and an uplifting character.
Speaking about the inspiration behind the piece, Giant Killers explain: “‘One For Georgie’ is a tribute to a footballing great, it marks 20 years since his passing, but it’s also about what can happen to anybody when your endeavours, whatever they are, veer from going swimmingly well to pear-shaped – that’s happened to us, not just once, but twice! Never take anything for granted.” ‘I Can’t Live Without You’ is the B-side from the single.
