Giant and the Georges: “The atmosphere at our gigs after lockdown was absolutely electric”

Emerging from Birmingham, Giant and the Georges are one of the best indie bands we have heard in a while. And while that sounds flashy, we can assure you that we were quite impressed by their latest single, ‘Maybe Baby’.

While their musicianship is on point, their strength is their songwriting prowess. ‘Maybe Baby’ will instantly resonate with the listener, especially thanks to a gloriously catchy chorus, which we are confident will go a long way into showcasing the quality the band has to offer.

Resembling a witty blend between Blur and Pixies, Giant and the Georges mean mellow guitars, tame drums and melodious toplines. Featuring two real-life brothers (the Georges), the group has been championed by the likes of BBC Introducing, and it’s not hard to see why.

Intrigued by the project, we caught up with the British talents to find out more about their artistry and future goals… interview below!

Hey guys, how is it going? some of our readers might not be familiar with your project, how would you describe yourself, in a few words?

Zingy hooks, tangy riffs and vocal harmonies sweeter than honey! Based in the Black Country, West Midlands, Giant and the Georges are dynamic performers blending shimmering indie-rock with frantic lyricism. Consisting of two brothers (the Georges), a relatively tall man (the Giant) and their ‘solid as a rock’ drummer, GATG are guaranteed to captivate any audience (terms and conditions apply).

Your current work is the result of a long journey; How did you get together?

Ben and Sam George, the two brothers in the band, have been performing together almost all of their lives. However, it was their younger sister who actually bought the band together for a ‘one-off’ charity gig in 2018. Four years later, alongside drummer Kristian Hohn and bass player Luke Best, the band are still going strong!

If you had the opportunity to pick any artists in the world for a collaboration, who would be your first choice? (and second choice, perhaps?)

The Pixies have always been a massive influence on us as a band and particularly on our latest track “Maybe Baby”. So without them knowing it we’d like to think the Pixies have already collaborated with us on this one! We’re also huge fans of the band Black Honey and it would be a dream come true to one day perform on the same bill as them!

Your latest release takes the shape of ‘Maybe Baby’, a 90’s infused mellow pop gem. Do you think the track is representative of you as a band?

Out of all the songs we’ve released so far, we think this one could actually be the most representative of us as a band. A killer guitar riff laid over a bouncy bass and drum groove, topped off with silky vocal harmonies.

What’s your songwriting process like? Do you write together or individually?

Usually, we write our tunes separately and then bring them together as a full band. That’s what makes this release so special, it was created organically in the rehearsal room, with each member of the band contributing from the very start! It felt like a much more holistic process.

We love the track – It’s not hard to understand why you are receiving so much attention from radio and press. How do you feel about it?

The track has actually been a few years in the making and has made its way in and out of our set list in various forms. However, it wasn’t until it was recorded at the illustrious Magic Garden Recording Studio that the track really came to life! Working hard behind the scenes with our good friend and producer Liam Radburn to finally achieve the sound we envisioned, we are all immensely proud of this track.

Artistically speaking, what challenges have the last two years presented you with?

The pandemic presented lots of challenges for us as a band. Not being able to perform or even rehearse for two years was extremely difficult. However, the time off did allow us to focus on songwriting and create a lot of new material. It also gave us chance to really miss live music and re-ignite our passion for the band. The atmosphere at our gigs after lockdown was absolutely electric and we sold out venues across the Midlands.

What are the next steps for your project? Anything exciting on the horizon?

To celebrate the release of “Maybe Baby” we’re performing a headline gig at Muthers Studio in Birmingham and the very next day will be journeying down to London to perform at the legendary Dublin Castle! We’re also hoping to get back on the road in early 2023 and to return to some of our favourite cities around the UK… maybe even extending the tour into Europe!
