Geoff Gibbons Faces the ‘Execution Man’

Jeremy Bregman

Geoff Gibbons is a Vancouver-based Americana singer/songwriter, and he’s just unleashed ‘Execution Man’, his second single of the year so far. I have to say…it’s an instant classic! Conjuring up a ghostly vibe of Western Noir expertly intertwined with soulful and classic rock sounds, ‘Execution Man’ really is as good as they come. Gibbons’ vocals fit in perfectly with the instrumental side of things, as he takes you on a reflective journey of self-actualisation. “We form so much of our identities based on falsehoods,” says Gibbons. “‘Execution Man’ relates that the death of the false self is necessary in order to discover the true self.”

Interestingly, ‘Execution Man’ was originally produced by Gibbons in the studio with a full band. The musician, however, decided to strip it down to its core, and invite some talented artists to contribute backing vocals, slide guitar, a Hammond organ, and a Wurlitzer to proceedings. The result is just pure magic!

I could go on and on about my love for this tune but, as always, I prefer to just offer it up and allow you to experience it for yourself. Gibbons’ ability to reinvent and evolve his sound is truly something to behold, and we look forward to hearing what he has next up his sleeve!
