There’s music and music. There’s the uplifting, upbeat banger for drunken late-night sessions, and there’s the melancholic, nostalgic slow-tempo ballad for a reflective Sunday evening. Then, there are timeless, borderless gems: it is music for the soul, music that elevates the listeners to a higher state of consciousness, helping them deal with challenges, change, and the confusions of our modern times. It is pure escapism, providing a place where one can rest – although for a brief moment – before returning to the everyday hustle.
Just look at Scottish duo Gefahrgeist. Their latest release ‘In Limbo’ fits exactly the type of sound matter we were referring to. A 6-minutes long journey into ethereal, evocative vocals and poignant, bucolic soundscapes. What more can you wish for?
The collaboration between singer and songwriter Fiona Lidell and producer Niall Rae, Gefahrgeist have been a sort of best-kept secret since their debut in 2020, constantly exploring the intersection between choral vocals and mellow, pensive electronica, always sharing a certain pop sensibility. ‘In Limbo’ pushes the boundaries even further, navigating toward leftfield and ambient tones. Liddell’s vocals are the most magical they have ever been, recreating an otherworldly, legendary universe where one feels small, yet taken care of. Following her lead, Rae builds an intangible, celestial sonic backdrop blending organic poignant, long strings and ever-evolving synthesisers. Very soundtrack-like.
It is a real journey, albeit a long one. It is also very rewarding, you’ll find yourself going back to it over and over again. What are you waiting for?
