Gav Moran Shares Nuanced and Rarefied Neo-Classical Album ‘Broken Pieces’

We’ll say it upfront: ‘Broken Pieces’ is not a record for everyone. One needs to be receptive and sensible to truly connect with Gav Moran’s work, being so culturally charged and far from the mainstream. Luckily, if you were to try and approach the record, you’d find yourself in a nuanced and evocative stream of neo-classical compositions, all delving into long, strings-powered soundscapes and gentle textures.

‘Broken Pieces’ will perhaps be classified as cinematic by the general consumer. Sure, that makes sense, the issue is that the album doesn’t just want to be a soundtrack, rather, it is proud of being a work of art in its own right, a meaningful slice of musical goodness stemming from Moran’s personal artistic research. Built over orchestral-style strings and refined grand piano lines, ‘Broken Pieces’ boasts rarefied and minimal arrangements; like an old friend, the album is there when matters, leaving ample space for silence, introspection and nostalgia.

Moran’s main influences are classical artists from the Baroque and Romantic periods, as well as contemporaries like Max Richter and Philip Glass. Recorded in the composer’s own studio in Ireland, the album was showcased on The Power Of Dreams Radio show on Ireland’s Dublin South FM, hosted by Marian Shanley.
