Garland Kelley is a Nashville-based singer/songwriter who’s had a pretty amazing 2023 so far. His first two singles, ‘A Mind of Your Own’ and ‘The Point of No Return’ have both received thousands of plays on Spotify and now he’s back with another beauty called ‘The Higher Road’. Described as “one of the most understated songs in Garland’s discography,” the tune’s strength actually lies in its relative “simplicity”. The rich acoustic guitar, when combined with Kelley’s passionate and warm vocals, produces a dreamy and swayful track. You never get a sense of anything missing, and there’s an atmospheric and serene ambience that envelops the song.
“The Higher Road was written when I was sixteen during the rise and fall of my first heartbreak,” says Kelley. As with all of his work, the tune showcases an artist who’s fearless when it comes to exploring deeply personal subjects. Existentialism, love, life, it’s all on the table with Kelley.
Taking inspiration from a wide variety of acts; The Tallest Man on Earth, Of Monsters and Men, Wilco, Damien Rice, and Glen Hansard to name just a few, Garland Kelley is putting a fresh spin on the Nashville sound. He’s a seriously exciting musician, and I have no doubt we’ll be hearing from him again very shortly!
